Essay - Topic: Mandatory Trigger Locks

In my introductory essay, I would like to discuss a new bill that has been co-sponsored by that friend of liberty herself, Barbara Boxer, the "Child Safety Lock Act of 1997". Boxer's bill would require that gun owners (law abiding ones that is, since they are the only ones that pay attention to the law) keep trigger locks on their weapons while stored at home. The stated goal of the law is to make sure that the kiddies don't blow their own, or their sibling's, head off. One could see the point of such a law, and it is being touted as a reasonable restraint on gun owners. However, knowing the track record of Commissar Boxer, one has to take a second look.

First of all, this is another attempt by the federal government to be the substitute parent for its citizens, abrogating another responsibility that belongs in the home (can you say V-chip and Communications Decency Act?). The government assumes that all its citizens are idiots; who, without proper rules and regulations, can't run their own households. It is a parent's responsibility to see to the welfare and safety of their children, not the federal government's.

Secondly, having a trigger lock on a weapon renders it almost useless as a self defense instrument. If someone is breaking into your home, as you are half asleep, are you going to have time to find the key to the lock. If the answer is no, you are likely to end up dead. Don't think that Comrade Boxer and those of her ilk don't realize this; they do, but they just don't care.

Lastly, name one other product, or instrument, who's use in the household is regulated by the federal government? There are many dangers in the house for children, and adults alike; from light sockets, to drain cleaner, to the bathtub, to kitchen knives. I don't see a law mandating locked sheaths for steak knives, or lifeguards for the bathtub (children do drown you know). But in the eyes of liberals like Mdme Boxer, guns and gun owners are different; even though gun owners are specifically protected under the constitution (a discussion on the 2nd Amendment will follow at a later date; and don't get me started on the 9th and 10th Amendments, we'll be here all day!). We are targets. Any chance that the liberals in the politburo (oops, I mean Congress) can get to put the squeeze on law abiding, decent living, honest Americans, who happen to own guns, they will take. In their eyes, we are criminals, even though we have broken no laws, and are just exercising our Constitutional rights.

This is why vigilance is the word of the day. If you are not always on the lookout against foes like Mz Boxer (well intended or not), your rights will disappear, slowly but surely. It is a never ending struggle; one that sometimes I am not sure will be won. But, the fight is on!

"Law, being a sign of Corruption in Man; many laws are signs of Corruption of a State."
